from 66 reviewsThe narrative of Time Warped is fantastic. It is intricate without being too complex and is written to perfection. At first, I thought this would be a simple YA tale, but Micky O'Brady surprised me. Nonie is not your typical YA protagonist. She is not a cry baby and is not desperate to give her family a better life. She is not a damsel in distress who desperately needs a companion to help her out. Nonie is a smart girl (smarter than her age) and knows what she needs to do to get out of a mess. Kieran and Nonie are partners and companions. No one has the upper hand in the relationship, and I love that. The descriptions blew my mind. From the opening scene till the very last one, the author created pictures with her words, making it easier for me to enjoy the story. The action is alive, the plot is perfect, and the development is on point!
I have certainly never been as engrossed in a story as I was with Time Warped. Micky O’Brady has taken a classic science fiction theme – time travel – and turned it into an original thriller that is both futuristic and also modern and relatable at the same time. It is way more than just science fiction; there is suspense, mystery, and romance all twisted together in a complex plot. Nonie’s multiple timelines are presented in an out-of-sequence manner that is perfect for the presentation, and all the key moments are revealed with perfect timing. I am still in shock at the way things worked out, and I would love to read this book again just to find all of the little hints that were hidden along the way.
Micky O’Brady’s Playing with #Fire is a beautifully written and compelling story about a teen’s recovery from social media bullying and her experiences in the world of pro-wrestling. O’Brady’s plot is marvelous and has something for everyone. There’s a compelling romance, the dark vision of a horde of bullies masquerading as high school seniors, and the mystery behind a badly burned classmate whose very presence seems to inspire his peers to physically abuse him at every opportunity. Watching Everly navigate her parental issues while staying above the small-mindedness and meanness of high school is fascinating, but not nearly as much as her introduction to pro-wrestling. I was enthralled reading about the training she receives under the tutelage of Fire, Ben Bullet’s assistant, and loved learning about a sport I had previously no interest in. Playing with #Fire is a joy to read; one of those books that get you wrapped up in the story and reluctant to come up for air. It’s most highly recommended.
When a friend first recommended this book to me I was like ahh... fine, I'll read it. I'm more of the hard sci-fi sort and nothing in the YA genre really stuck with me.Playing With #Fire was different. The two main characters are complex, non-perfect individuals that are each struggling to grapple with past events. But they are also strong-willed, courageous, and compassionate: traits that become even more apparent as their relationship develops. It's invigorating to watch, and you find yourself rooting for them through every trial by #fire.I'm not a wrestler, haha, a theme that the book kind of centers around. However, the book makes all the technical mumbo-jumbo easy and entertaining to follow, and weaves it into the main conflict really well. And- spoiler alert- sometimes it's nice to see school bullies when they have it coming. So if you're a young adult (whatever that means nowadays) and looking for something to read- highly recommend! It's not super long and took me maybe about three hours to finish. Maybe just don't try some of the moves at home lolz.
O'Brady has created a socially relevant and potent book for YA readers and uses the platform of wrestling to tell the story, which is original and interesting. You don't find that many novels--YA or adult--that use it as a plot device, and it really works here. You don't have to be a wrestling fan to like this story, but it may make you one by the time you're finished. Everly and Fire are likable, as are the other characters--Haze in particular. O'Brady has adolescent issues down to a T. You learn what lies beneath the characters' motivations for bullying. The plot is intense but appealing, the dialogue dynamic, the conflict explosive, and the ending very satisfying. Playing with #Fire by Micky O'Brady is an A+ read for wrestling fans or anyone affected by bullying.
One of the most immediate and effective elements of this excellent book is the presentation of Noa, the central protagonist. Taking a condition like panic attacks, which can be so crippling and incapacitating, and using it to show such strength and that anyone can become heroic, no matter what they have to deal with, is a truly inspiring central theme. Noa and Avery are charmingly written with relatable dialogue and a genuine emotional sensitivity to their growing closeness, which weaves through the well-designed plot without ever taking it over too much. The plot itself is very well planned for the chain of events, with many a twist and cliffhanger moment that is sure to keep the young adult target audience on their toes. Overall, Between Worlds by author Micky O’Brady is an accomplished and exciting paranormal work that offers plenty for its readership in terms of style, atmosphere, and character development.
Angel Down by Micky O’Brady is a paranormal romance with action-adventure elements that appears eminently suited to the young adult audience. Angel Down includes the thrill of a forbidden romance, the excitement of reconnaissance, and the satisfaction of suspicions confirmed. O’Brady cleverly represents a class system based on inequity and institutionalized abuse of power, together with the struggle to right ancient wrongs. The confrontation between Jamie, Lea, and the Founder assemblage is dramatic, followed by the surprising sacrifice of an unexpected character. The characters created by Micky O’Brady are likable and complex, developing throughout the novel. Angel Down is full of surprises that Micky O’Brady cleverly unveils as the story progresses, and includes clever nuances that will make the story appeal during second and subsequent readings.
Like most young adult fiction novels, the young protagonist narrates the tale. Lea has a tragic past from losing her parents, but her tone is pure sunshine in most cases as if she has learned to embrace her tragedy. As for Jamie, her love interest, O’Brady has done to angels what Stephenie Meyer has done to vampires. Micky O’Brady, however, explores Lea and Jamie’s relationship on a more grounded level, as their romance blooms at a time when humanity is on the brink of a great rebellion. Another amazing thing here is the divided feelings among humans about their receptiveness to the Founders’ rule, much like our differing stand on the dogmas of organized religion. Angels here are trying to save us from our own folly, but there seems to be a catch. The secret of the Founders that will determine the fate of humanity is something that you need to discover—a secret that makes Angel Down a must-read.
The story is layered, and it takes time to unravel the secrets of 33 Degrees one by one, but Micky O’Brady does it in a way that is not overwhelming. It kept me engaged in the mystery, and I was thoroughly hooked. It was intriguing that someone could make his heart stop to enter the afterlife and then come back to life again. There were several plot twists that I did not see coming. All the action and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. The chapters flowed smoothly into each other. The characters were brilliant and complex and were developed naturally throughout the story. The story is well-written and held my interest. O’Brady took me on a bumpy ride, and I did not expect the ending. It was mind-blowing.
I've always been a big fan of O'Brady's work, but this is the first time I literally couldn't put it down. Once I started reading it, I wanted to know what happened next. I purposely didn't look at the clock to see what time I finished it; I didn't want to know how late I had stayed up reading it. Although it strayed a bit further into the supernatural than I'm really comfortable with, it was fascinating and engaging, and contained the signature romance O'Brady is famous for. I think she has another hit on her hands.
Micky O'Brady's realistic, heart-wrenching story is filled with love and friendship, bound with grief, desperation, and regrets. The complexity of the storyline brings about a shocking ending which left me shaking my head, trying to comprehend what I had just read. I enjoyed reading about Gwen's and Kai's carefree youth before the horrific events which followed. At first, the characters that were added in between seemed like page-fillers, but each soon became relevant to the development of the storyline and kept me thoroughly engrossed. O'Brady's 33 Degrees hit home to me in many ways, having recently (and suddenly) lost my father, but it also helped me find some peace of mind regarding his death. I know that I will be giving this novel a place on the top shelf of my reading collection, where only the best books reside.
